In the audio industry, an A1 (Audio Technician 1 or Lead Audio Engineer) is the primary person responsible for designing, managing, and executing the audio aspects of a production. Their role is pivotal in ensuring high-quality sound for live events, broadcasts, or recordings. Here are my main responsibilities of an A1:
1. System Design and Setup
• Designs the overall audio system for the event or production, including placement of speakers, microphones, and monitors.
• Determines the appropriate equipment needed (e.g., mixing consoles, processors, amplifiers) based on the venue and event requirements.
• Oversees the installation, configuration, and testing of audio equipment.
2. Front-of-House and Monitor Mixing
• Operates the main mixing console, adjusting levels, EQ, effects, and dynamics for the audience (front-of-house) or performers (monitors).
• Ensures a balanced and clear sound experience, adapting in real-time to changes in the performance or environment.
3. Team Leadership
• Supervises the audio team, including the A2 and other technicians.
• Assigns roles, such as wireless mic management, stage operations, or system maintenance.
• Communicates with other departments, such as lighting, video, and stage management, to ensure smooth integration.
4. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving
• Diagnoses and resolves technical issues quickly during events to prevent disruptions.
• Ensures redundancy and backup systems are in place to handle potential equipment failures.
5. Sound Design and Creative Input
• Collaborates with directors, producers, or event organizers to achieve the desired audio aesthetic.
• Integrates sound effects, music, or voiceovers where needed, tailoring the soundscape to the production’s needs.

The A1 is the leader of the audio department, responsible for delivering high-quality sound and managing all aspects of the audio operation. This role requires both technical expertise and the ability to adapt to the creative and logistical demands of a production.
When a company hires me as their A1 for an event, I bring all the essential tools for a flawless execution, including my laptops, LCD screen, QLab software, wireless routers, iPad, headset microphones, audio interfaces, shotgun microphones, VOG mic and more.
My workflow includes a Mac laptop running DJ Pro for walk-in and walk-out music, along with Smaart 9 connected to an external monitor for system analysis. Another Mac is dedicated to QLab for play-ons, with Workbench running in the background. I also use an iPad connected via a wireless router for remote console control, a QLab remote controller, a VOG mic, and all necessary stands and accessories to ensure seamless operation.

• Operates backstage or off-site during events, managing wireless microphone systems, in-ear monitors (IEMs), and communication systems.
• Responsible for mic’ing up performers or presenters, ensuring proper placement and minimal interference.
• Monitors equipment for potential issues during the performance or broadcast.
3. Communication and Coordination
• Acts as a bridge between the A1 (front-of-house or main engineer) and the stage crew or performers.
• Facilitates communication via intercom systems to ensure smooth operation of audio cues and changes during the event.
4. Wireless Frequency Management
• Manages wireless frequency coordination to avoid interference, particularly in complex environments like live performances or large-scale events.
5. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving
• Handles any audio-related issues that arise in real-time, ensuring minimal disruption to the event or recording.
6. Support During Rehearsals and Soundchecks
• Assists the A1 in testing audio levels and making adjustments as needed.
• Works closely with talent during soundchecks to ensure comfort and optimal sound quality.

As your A2, I prioritize maintaining an organized and highly functional workspace. I use a quick-release management system for lavaliers, allowing me to work more efficiently and perform my tasks faster than others.
